Primary instabilities in convective cells due to nonuniform heating

چکیده
We study a convection problem in a container with a surface open to the air and heated by a long wire placed at the bottom. Coupled buoyancy and thermocapillarity effects are taken into account. A basic convective state appears as soon as a temperature gradient with horizontal component different from zero is applied. It consists of two big rolls that fill the convective cell and are parallel to the heater. A numerical solution allows us to determine this basic state. A linear stability analysis on this solution is carried out. For different values of the applied temperature gradient the basic rolls undergo a stationary bifurcation. The thresholds depend on the fluid properties, on the geometry of the heater, and on the heat exchange on the free surface. This confirms the results obtained in recent experiments. @S1063-651X~97!00609-0#

Optically Driven Domain Instability and High-Frequency Current Oscillations in Photoexcited GaAs under Nonuniform Electron Heating
Fast domain instabilities induced by light-interference pattern in dc-biased semi-insulating GaAs are investigated. Current oscillations in GHz-frequency range are observed due to nonuniform electron heating and domains formation in light-induced grating. Characteristic features of the oscillations under various experimental conditions are presented. Numerical calculations based on the hot-elec...
متن کاملLarge-scale instabilities in a nonrotating turbulent convection
A theoretical approach proposed by Elperin et al. Phys. Rev. E 66, 066305 2002 is developed further to investigate formation of large-scale coherent structures in a nonrotating turbulent convection via excitation of a large-scale instability. In particular, the convective-wind instability that causes formation of large-scale coherent motions in the form of cells, can be excited in a shear-free ...
متن کاملDiscussion on the paper: Vortex Instability of Mixed Convection Boundary Layer Flow Adjacent to a Nonisothermal Horizontal Surface in a Porous Medium with Variable Permeability’
In this Discussion we shall reflect on various aspects of the recently published paper by Elaiw and Ibrahim (2008). Their paper considers the onset of convective instabilities of a mixed convection boundary layer induced by the combined presence of a hot horizontal surface in an unbounded porous medium and an externally-imposed uniform horizontal forced convective flow. These authors also adopt...
متن کاملNonlinear dynamics of waves and modulated waves in 1D thermocapillary flows. II: Convective/absolute transitions
We present experimental results on hydrothermal waves in long and narrow 1D channels. In a bounded channel, we describe the primary and secondary instabilities leading to waves and modulated waves in terms of convective/absolute transitions. Because of on the combined effect of finite group velocity and of the presence of boundaries, the wave-patterns are non-uniform in space. We also investiga...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of Non-uniform Heating on Flow Boiling Instabilities in a Microchannels Based Heat Sink
Two-phase flow boiling in microchannels is one of the most promising cooling technologies able to cope with high heat fluxes generated by the next generation of central processor units (CPU). If flow boiling is to be used as a thermal management method for high heat flux electronics it is necessary to understand the behaviour of a non-uniform heat distribution, which is typically the case obser...
